I’m Good

I’m good

Psalm 51:5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.

Several years ago there began a subtle movement to treat the first 3 chapters of Genesis as a fable or myth. This movement appears to have taken root in many Christians and churches today. If we take this approach then we eliminate divine order, God as the creator, God’s creation of marriage, temptation, the fall of man, the consequences of rebellion and the promise of a Savior. We could spend months covering the effects of each one being eliminated but let’s just focus on the loss of the original sin. This would mean man is basically good and externally influenced and controlled by the environment by which he is raised. It also means that man is the master of his life and no one has the right to judge his life choices. We don’t have to train up a child in the way they should go because that would interfere with their right to self-govern. Because we all know that the 2 year old having a hissy fit in Walmart had to be trained to do that because humans are all born good. You don’t need to train a child to lie, throw a fit or disobey. They know it naturally. We have become a country of spoiled professional victim brats. I have a very kind and graceful pastor friend who is not afraid to conduct church discipline when needed. No matter how graceful he conducts this process the members who receive this always leave his church. If you do not understand and accept the sinful nature of your heart then you will not submit to correction and discipline. When I ask someone how they are doing and they respond with “I’m good.”  I jokingly reply “Only God is good.” David in the first 4 verses of Psalm 51 recognized that there was no good within him apart from God’s goodness. He knew that down to his core he was a sinner who needed to be cleaned and restored. In verse 5, he wasn’t saying his parents committed sin by having sex to conceive him. He recognizes through his brokenness that at the moment of his conception his soul was stained with the curse of Adam. Even when you know better, raised in the church and sit under great preaching you still have to contend with that old nature. Sanctification is the process by which we continue to decrease the sinful nature of self-reliance and increase God reliance and governing. I often tell people I have witnessed just a glimpse of the Charles Manson that lives in my heart. If that is so then why would I want to direct and govern my life. Have you gotten a glimpse of your sinful nature or do you still believe that deep down you are a pretty good guy.
