Psalm 51:4
Psalm 51:4
Psalm 51:4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.
In the restoration process, the ability to be completely honest and accurate in your offences is paramount but also extremely difficult. Being able to be honest and accurate leads us into ownership and accountability. These things are difficult because it goes against our sinful nature. When God confronted Adam regarding his sin; he blamed his wife, the snake and God. He was trying to mitigate the consequences of his sin. David, as king, had the power and ability to blame everyone else and minimize his copiability. He did not minimize nor shift blame. He was honest, accurate and owned his sinful actions. He didn’t just take his sins before people. He took them to the Holy, Pure and Righteous God whom he knew intimately. Bringing your sins before another person is difficult and painful but bringing them to God will crush you. This was also compounded by the fact that David knew better. He wasn’t a pagan or gentile who sinned out of ignorance. So why did David do this? Because he was a man after God’s own heart. The evil he had done had created a distance between him and God. He was accurate and honest about his sins by calling them evil.
Someone once said, you can’t appreciate the sweetness of God’s grace until you taste the bitterness of your sins. This process of being honest, accurate and ownership before God will bring you to a point of brokenness. Without brokenness there will be no long term healing or recovery from sexual idolatry. Brokenness crushes our self-will and promotes our God reliance. This in turn directs a willingness to do whatever it takes to be healed.
You may be struggling today with bringing your secret sexual sin into the light. This struggle may be centered around the theme that you knew better but rebelled anyway. This keeps you in a place of condemnation, guilt and shame. The Old Testament is filled with people who knew better but they are still mentioned in Hebrews as people of faith. Paul knew better but he described himself as the chief sinner and struggled with doing what was right. Tasting the sweetness of God’s grace begins with being honest and owning the bitterness of your sin. Be honest with God today. He can handle it because his Son already bought it.
