Call the Plumber

Call the Plumber

Psalm 51:6 Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.

Fewer things are more frustrating than a blocked drainage system in your house. Your sink, bathtub and commode become nonfunctional because the wastewater has nowhere to go. The professional plumber may send a cable into the pipes with an appropriate size cleaning head and clear out the blockage. A cardiologist may perform a similar process with a heart patient who has blockage within the artery system. Just don’t get the plumber confused with the cardiologist when you have heart blockage.

The word heart is used almost 1,000 times within scripture. It always refers to the absolute core of a person’s inner life. From this core come our thoughts, beliefs, desires and choices we make. In today’s verse, David understands that God takes delight in his truth reaching the inner most part or heart of a person. If this occurs then everything that flows from this heart will reflect God’s truth. But what if, like the physical heart or the sewer drain, it gets blocked. There are things we can do to block or impede His truth reaching this most intimate part of our being. When we place and protect idols in our life we are blocking his truth through misusing our worship drive. Keeping his sins secret had blocked his intimacy with God and David was miserable. He was miserable because he had once experienced it and now it was blocked.

You can block his truth through a spirit of fear. For a large portion of my life I struggled with being an approval addict. I feared the disapproval of man more than God’s. That in turn made man’s approval an idol to me. In other words, if there are things in your thoughts, mind and belief system which don’t agree with God’s truth about you then they become blockage. Once your secret sexual sin is exposed, God begins a process of revealing all the barriers to his truth from penetrating to your heart. 2 Corinthians 10: 5-6 tells us to take captive every thought and pretense that sets itself up against God’s truth. Getting sober and demolishing the stronghold of sexual addiction is only the first step to removing our blockage.

You don’t need a plumber but you do need a heart doctor to address this blockage and his name is the Holy Spirit. If you submit to his treatment plan he will reveal, counsel, guide and comfort you during his procedure.
