Dead Battery

Dead Battery

Psalm 51:8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice.

You return to your car after a short time of grocery shopping only to hear the dreaded sound of click-click-click when you try to start. You try again only this time to hear nothing. Your battery has nothing left to give. Just when the despair kicks in you hear a the friendly voice of the neighboring driver say, “Hey, I’ve got jumper cables. I’d be glad to give you a jump start.” The assistance is successful as your car’s engine roars to life. What a sweet sound. The man who assisted you reports, “I noticed you have a new battery. You need to have a mechanic find out what is draining your battery.” You can ignore the sage advice or seek help in finding the real source of your problem.

Psalm 51 is the blueprint for God’s plan for restoration following our sinful rebellion. David wants to hear joy and gladness once again. The sin in his life had “drained the battery” of his joy. Some of you reading this have lost your joy because the sin in your life keeps draining your spiritual battery. Just like the car that needs a jump start. You can ignore the real issue and live your life getting a spiritual boast every Sunday only to find your battery dead by Monday or you can submit to God with honesty and openness. Treating church as battery charger sounds theologically sound but can also be similar to treating God like a drug. I grew up when the phrase “get high on Jesus” was frequently used to encourage people to leave drugs and follow Jesus. Using God to medicate the effects of unconfessed sin is not sustainable. Every person I have ever known who used God this way eventually walked away from the faith. David could have written a very joyful song to elevate his mood but he did not. He could have ordered a nation wide worship service filled with celebration, merriment and praise but he did not. Those events could follow but now he needed God to restore joy into the bones He had broken.

If you are carry a secret sin today, stop using church, worship, praise music and fellowship as a drug. True healing begins with honesty, openness and brokenness. Through that process God will give you a new worship, praise and fellowship. Your spiritual battery can only be fixed when the secret sin that drains it is addressed.
