Deep Cleaning
Deep Cleaning
Psalm 51:7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
The next time you go to the grocery store or garden center ask, “Where can I find the hyssop?” Once you get past their quizzical looks let them know it is a small, bushy, aromatic plant used primarily as a tool for ceremonial cleansing, purification and the application of blood. Then be prepared to be escorted from the building by security. The act of purging involves removing whatever is impure, unwanted or harmful through the act of cleansing and or purification. David had kept something impure and harmful within his soul through his unconfessed sin. He didn’t just want it removed but he wanted to be cleaned, washed and made pure as the new snow. The Old Testament describes using hyssop within its ceremonial cleansing rituals for the Israelites. Not one single person was ever cleansed of their sins through a religious ritual or routine. The Old Testament’s rituals only foreshadowed and pointed to the true cleansing in Jesus’ redemptive work.
Maybe you are in a place where your secret sin has been exposed and confessed. You are maintaining a steady schedule of church attendance. So it sounds good and looks good but have you asked God to purge you of any and all impure, unwanted and harmful areas of your life. Has he purged you of all your resentments you used to support your secret sin? Has he purged you of the guilt and shame from not just your secret sin but all your past failures. Have you ever had an upset stomach and you knew if you vomited you would feel better? Sometimes that’s what occurs with disclosure of secret sins. We feel better but did we deal with the core or the other issues that continue to make you sick? David didn’t just want to be clean in the area of his sexual sin, he wanted to be clean in all areas. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 tells us we are temples of his Holy Spirit. Are you ready for your temple to be cleaned? Going to church on a routine basis is great but routines and rituals won’t clean your soul. Many cleaning products offer a deep cleaning effect but nothing can clean like God’s Spirit. All you need to do is humbly submit ask for it today.
