Knuckleheads for Christ

Psalm 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

I have a theory that God takes hard headed people and through a process of brokenness and restoration makes them steadfast. Often times the trait of being hardheaded is elevated and promoted. We will use terms such as determined, driven and relentless to identify such people. Most successful athletes, military leaders and business leaders could be described with these adjectives. These terms can also be used when someone is pursuing their favorite sin. David was determined, driven and relentless in his pursuit of Bathsheba. He had tunnel vision when it can to his actions and doing whatever it took to obtain his goal. So much that he forgot who he was and who he belonged to. You or someone you know may be following the same path regarding sexual sin. This hardheaded drive is also occupied by delusional thinking which justifies your behavior. David’s thinking and behavior was delusional in believing he could hide his sin from God. We will rationalize, minimize and excuse our behavior so we can maintain this pursuit and drive toward our favorite sin.

The heart and or the spirit are the driving force behind all our actions. If there is impurity in your heart then, at some point, it will drive you to make impure decisions. First, David wanted a clean and pure heart. Then he wanted his steadfast spirit, which had glorified God, to be restored. Trying to hardhead your way through the recovery from sexual idolatry will only produce a “white knuckling” effect. With a clean heart then our drive and motivation is empowered by God’s Spirit.

I often joke that I am starting a new organization called Knuckleheads for Christ. I will ask Paul to be the CEO. He once was driven to persecute Christians. Jesus broke this rebellious spirit and gave him a new drive in the spreading of the Gospel. You may be a fellow knuckle head and if so I encourage you to surrender and submit that drive unto the Lord. Believe me, God’s love for you is more determined, relentless and driven than your hardheadedness.
