Go on and get!

Go on and get!

Psalm 51:11 Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.

Festus from the TV show Gunsmoke had many unique phrases. One such phrase was “You need to go on and get!” He often used this with some rowdy cowboys who were stirring up trouble. If they did not respond then Matt Dillon would banish them from Dodge City. Many church leaders who struggle with secret sexual sins often fear disclosure and hearing they are disqualified from church service. In the past, I worked with many adopted and foster care children. Many of them lived in fear that if they weren’t good enough they would be sent away. In our verse today, David is not concerned with being sent away by man but by God. We have a different perspective from David because we are on the other side of the cross. Romans 8:37-39 reassures us that nothing can separate us from the love of God through Christ Jesus our Lord. On your very worst day, if everyone has abandoned you, then it will be just you and the God of the Universe. That’s a pretty good day.

David is also asking for the Holy Spirit to not be taken from him. He knew without the guidance, counsel, wisdom and comfort of God’s Spirit then he would surely fail. When Elijah entered the cave, he was physically, spiritual and relationally broken. In this stillness he heard the whispering voice of God. David as a boy spent many days alone with God on the hill sides. He also heard the still small voice of God. Sin is about chaos. You cannot hear a whispering voice in the midst of chaos. David’s sins quenched and grieved the Holy Spirit. Without this guidance he directed his own life and the results were horrendous. “Your very best thinking got you sitting here with me” is a phrase I have used on several occasions with someone who is trying to direct their own life. Thinking you can cover up and hide your sins is delusional and producing chaos not only in your life but those around you. Maybe today is the day you tell your self reliant sinful nature  “You need to go on and get!”
