Restored Joy
Psalm 51:12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.
I love the videos of babies and young children laughing. They laugh with reckless abandon joy. They don’t care how loud they are or who’s watching. They just let it flow all the way from their itty bitty toes. How do you feel when you’ve lost something that was irreplaceable and of utmost value? Then how do you feel when it was found? David had lost the reckless abandon joy of his salvation. It was worth more than his entire kingdom. He wanted it back but he knew he could not produce this joy through his own strength and willfulness. I lead a group for several months which had a young man who was a worship leader in his church. Because of his sexual sin he had lost his joy and ability to sing. Through God’s healing touch the joy returned. At the beginning of one group he asked if he could sing a song God had given him. This very humble young man begin to sing this song of pure joy the likes of which I have never heard before or since. Everyone in the building was overwhelmed by this event. Maybe you have lost this type of joy and you want it back. Our God is the God of restoration and if you humble yourself he too can give you a new song of joy.
David had been willfully disobedient in pursuing his sin. He no longer trusted his own will to do the right thing. He needed the Holy Spirit to uphold and sustain his willingness to pursue holiness and purity. Each day when you awaken, you have a choice regarding who will direct your will. There used to be a bumper sticker which declared that God was their co-pilot. I always wanted to tell the driver, “You’re an idiot, switch seats and let God drive.” You may never commit the sins David did. You may believe you are a pretty good person and usually make the right choices. God doesn’t call us to be pretty good, he calls us to be holy. Can your will pull that off? If you believe you can then you are just as deceived as the God is my co-pilot guy.
