Could I have a cup of amnesia?

Could I have a cup of amnesia, please?

Psalm 51:3  For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.

Jason Bourne got a boo-boo on his head and couldn’t remember who he was and all the bad things he had done. His former supervisors sure remembered and spent several hours of movie time trying to point out his former transgressions. Soap operas use amnesia to reset a long standing character and provide a new backstory and relationships. In other words, TV programs and movies have used amnesia as a “do over.” Many people will leave their home town in order to gain a fresh start and leave behind their past failures. Many will return only to find the memories are just as fresh to themselves as well as the people they left behind.

Many of us wish there could be selective memory loss or a cup of amnesia regarding our greatest sins. Some sins are so painful they fall into the category of being traumatic for others. These types of emotionally charged memories are often carried for a life time. The bottom line is this. Unless you and those around you are characters in a movie or TV show, the chances of amnesia occurring are slim to none.

There will be parts of your story which will be always be sad and painful but it doesn’t mean they can’t be redeemed. Your greatest failures can become the greatest testimony of God’s redemptive work. That is the major theme of Psalm 51. The testimony of God’s restoration and redemption through David’s greatest failures. The only way David could face the fallout and consequences of these sins was to stand on the assurance of God’s unfailing love, grace, mercy and forgiveness. Today, you may be dealing with the aftermath of your recently disclosed sexual sin. Positionally speaking, if you have sought God’s forgiveness then those sins are not here. They were bought and paid for over 2,000 years ago. They are departed as far as the east is from the west. We humbly accept this gift because we did nothing to earn it. This allows us to humbly acknowledge and validate those we have hurt. Your sin may carry lifelong consequences such as lost relationships, income, jobs and trust but nothing can separate you from God’s love. Romans 8:37-39 are some of my favorite verses because they remind me of the security of his love. Nothing can separate me from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord including my rebellious sins. We don’t need a cup of amnesia in order to deal with reminders of our sins. We need his grace to walk us through the hurt and consequences. Jesus reminded Paul through his thorn in the flesh; “my grace is sufficient, my strength is made perfect in your weakness.” It can be true for you as well.
