Testimony Part 2

Testimony Part 2

Psalm 51:13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you.

I knew a man once who was part of ministry which addressed the issue of sexual sin. His testimony of how he left his sinful past behind was very public and powerful. He begin to struggle with intrusive thoughts from his past and reached out for support from his Christian support base. Some of the comments he received were kind and supportive but most rebuked him. The common response was that he was diminishing or taking away from his testimony. He eventually returned to his old lifestyle.

We all love to hear the dramatic road to Damascus salvation testimony. What about the testimony that declares I came to know Jesus at an early age but I spit in his face anyway. This was my testimony part one. I believed and most often was told I really wasn’t saved and my testimony was false. I got “saved” so many times growing up that I wore out the carpet in the church from going down front so much. David was a child of faith and a man after God’s own heart. His testimony of faith took on and defeated a giant. But then he spit in God’s face. David was not disqualified. God didn’t tell him he would find someone else to be Jesus’ Granddaddy. God broke him, healed him, redeemed and restored him. My hurt, pain and anger kept me in a place of immature faith. God had to break, heal, redeem and restore me so I could carry out testimony part 2. Testimony part 2 is what occurs after you are saved. When people ask me to share my testimony, my response is “Which one? You want today’s, yesterday’s or last week?” We don’t want to hear that Christians struggle with sin. Particularly sexual sin. We want to hear a story of complete deliverance from the effects of past sins. For some believers, that is their true testimony. For most it is not. I believe Paul was aware of his struggles and battles and wasn’t afraid to share them with the whole world. David wanted his testimony part 2 to be one where he helped others avoid the pitfalls he experienced. You see if your testimony is your testimony then you will cling to it because it defines you. If your testimony is God’s testimony then it is a story about how weak you are and how great he is. “I came to know the Lord at an early age but he’s still working on me, to make me what I ought to be.”
