Just A Little Outside

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

“Just a little outside!” is the classic phrase uttered by Bob Uecker in the movie Major League. The pitcher, referred to as Wild Thing, can throw extremely fast but has no control. He has once again missed the strike zone by a mile when the radio play-by-play announcer Uecker describes the pitch. It turns out Wild Thing couldn’t see and just needed glasses. Wild Thing had all the skills he needed to become a major league star but he just couldn’t see the target.

Jesus spent 3 years repeatedly teaching the people about his kingdom and who he was. But they couldn’t see or hear the truth. Even his closest 12 followers couldn’t see or hear and seem to always miss the target of his teachings. There are many people who have sat under gifted preaching their whole life and still don’t see or hear the truth. There are thousands of gifted and intelligent teachers who miss the target as badly as Wild Thing. In turn these misguided teachers impress their inaccurate guidance upon their students. Before Jesus left he said he was sending someone to help his followers to understand and this helper would do even greater things than he did. That helper, guide and counselor is still available today. You can be the most talented person in the world and if you do not  follow the Way and have the Helper then you are worse off than the Wild Thing. I remember sitting in my intro to Sociology class where the professor was describing cultural relativism and watching all these 18 year old’s nod their heads in agreement. What he was really teaching was moral relativism which leads to universalism. We need to prepare ourselves and our children to seek the discernment given by the Holy Spirit so we are not led into missing the target. Jesus made it clear that he is the “strike zone” and the world doesn’t get to expand it. Are you seeing the strike zone clearly or do you need the glasses of the Holy Spirit to improve your vision?
