Who’s Your Daddy?
Who’s Your Daddy?
Galatians 1:10 For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.
“Who’s your Daddy?” used to be a familiar phrase spoken to another competitor when you just “schooled “ them in some game or sport. One of our core needs is that of approval. We begin to seek it from our parents at a very early age and some even strive for it years after their parents have died. Our core needs will drive and often control the decisions we will make throughout our lives. Many choices are often made based upon whether they gain the approval of important people in our lives. When something becomes your “Daddy” then it carries a level of influence and authority in your life. Seeking the approval of man can often cross over healthy lines and enter into a place of authority and even addiction.
Paul mentioned in the verse today that “if he were still trying to please man,” which implies that some point in the past he did. It would seem that this was a driving factor during his life as Saul the persecutor. It’s not an easy trip from Jerusalem to Damascus. He had to be driven to go to such extreme links. Maybe, he did it for the approval and praise of men. Attempting to fill this need for approval through worldly means will never satisfy. It always comes up short. There was a time in my life where I would not have a problem calling myself an approval addict. Today when people ask me if I am a recovering addict. My response is “I am a recovering approval addict.” I know I can relapse at any moment. Every other sinful or religious behavior I did during my addiction was driven by the need for approval. I couldn’t tolerate disapproval from even total strangers. If a complete stranger flipped me off in traffic, my whole day was ruined.
You see if you make someone else’s opinion more important than God’s then you made an idol of their opinion and a servant to their viewpoint. The only approval we must have is God’s. We can’t obtain it through good works because they are but dirty rags. If you are a Christian then you can’t be any more approved of than what you are right now. This approval comes through the perfect redemptive work of Christ and not your own. For most of you reading this it is old news. But what master will you serve today? You will be rejected and disapproved of today. Will you abide in the security of God’s unconditional approval or seek the table scraps of man’s approval. This choice will determine who’s your Daddy.
