Inconceivable!
Matthew 12:23 And all the people were amazed, and said, “Can this be the Son of David?”
The character Vizzini in the movie Princess Bride repeatedly utters the word inconceivable. He uses the word to describe events which are actually occurring right in front of him so this word usage makes no sense. He believes himself to be the smartest and most cleverest person in the world but yet he refuses to see the reality and evidence being demonstrated right before him. The word amazed is recorded 19 times within the New Testament. Most of these are used to describe the people witnessing illogical events which have just been demonstrated before them. In each situation you could place Vizzini declaring his famous but nonsensical word.
Since the beginning of recorded history man has taken God’s actions and tried to make them inconceivable even though the evidence is clearly before them. Creation, the flood, death and resurrection of Christ are just a few. Repeatedly doing this results in treating the factual evidence as a myth or fairy tale. Christ’s followers will often take some key components of their faith and view them as inconceivable. One of these components is the act of forgiveness. Throughout the church’s history we have picked particular sins and made them unforgivable. In years past this might have occurred with someone dealing with alcohol and drug addiction. Today, we have a more graceful response to someone seeking recovery from these chemical addictions. Extending grace to the repentant sexual addict can still be a struggle within the church today. It can also be difficult for the recovering sex addict to receive grace, mercy and forgiveness from God. They have witnessed the evidence of these 3 areas but treat it as inconceivable within this particular sin. They will mentally build a case against themselves which reinforces limited forgiveness within their lives. The hymn title is not Inconceivable Grace but Amazing Grace. Let’s show the world the evidence of the amazing grace of God’s forgiveness. The redemptive work of Christ was conceived in the mind of God, revealed in the work of Christ and directed today through His Spirit.
