Get out of the boat
Get out of the boat
Matthew 14:30-31 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
“I can’t believe what I just saw!” is something most of us have uttered when an unnatural occurrence takes place. Sometimes these events occur when we are the only witness and we exclaim “Boy, I wish I had a camera. No one will believe what just happened.” Other times these incidents are witnessed by a multitude of people and we challenge the others with “Did you see that?” Jesus’ closest followers spent 3 years witnessing such events. Some of these events were for a select few while others were shown to thousands of followers. The majority of the 5,000 plus people who had just been fed logged away in their minds this special event but it did not change their lives. Their bellies were filled and they went on with their lives. Some 2,000 years later, many followers treat church activities in the same fashion. We go to church, get our spiritual and sometimes physical bellies full, but we never get out of the comfortable “boat” of our daily lives.
Peter sometimes catches flack when he lacked faith and began to sink. Here are the facts. He was the only one to get out of the boat and he knew who to cry out for when he got into trouble. God’s spirit may be calling you to get out of your comfortable boat life of Christianity but your fear keeps you from responding. You may be afraid that you will fail this calling. You will fail but who will you cry out to when you do? Peter didn’t wait until he was pulling seaweed out of his ears at the bottom of the sea. He cried out when he began to sink. Are you afraid that if you get out of the boat you will be rejected? You will be. Are you afraid that you will be ridiculed, laughed at and isolated by your friends? You will be. When God calls you to get out the boat there will be rough waters but remember to keep your eyes on Jesus and cry out to him when you begin to sink.
